Engine wear-out diagnostics
Diagnostics of the engine state by the wear-out elements in oil is used in aviation, automotive, railway transport.
The great advantage of the method is that it provides diagnostics of friction couples state while operation without engine disassembling.
Fe (Iron), Al (Aluminum), Cu (Copper), Sn (Tin), Cr (Chromium), Ag (Silver), and Si (Silicon) appear in the oil while engine operation and wear-out. If there is leakage in the cooling system then Cr (Chromium), B (Boron), Na (Sodium), K (Potassium) used as corrosion inhibitors may appear in the oil samples. If the wear-out is determined at an early stage it can prevent emergency situation and the engine failure.
The test method of technical state diagnostics by monitoring of element appearance in oil is universal and may be applied for any gear with oil crankcase, transmission, gear box, main gear, transfer box, etc.
X-ray fluorescence method provides element determination in a sample with minimum sample preparation, The sample preparation consists of a fixed sample material mass filtration through filter (membrane filter with n*0.1 micron pores).
To improve filtration the sample can be diluted with hydrocarbon solvent. The particles of wear-out are left on the filter; the filter is dried and analyzed with spectrometer. The obtained value is divided by the fixed mass of the sample.
The test method sensitivity is n*0.1 microgram per filter, so several grams of the sample is sufficient to rut two concurrent measurements.
